The Toucan Keyboard Turns 6 Months Old

It's been an incredible 6 months since we first introduced the Toucan. Here's an update on what's changed, what's new, and what's coming next.

It’s been an incredible 6 months since we first introduced the Toucan. Since then, we’ve received a lot of feedback from the Toucan keeb users and great suggestions from the community. The Toucan is constantly evolving, and we will keep improving it.

Here is an update on what’s happening, the latest changes to the Toucan, and a sneak preview of what’s coming next.

1. Toucans in the Wild

Every time we receive a photo of a Toucan sitting at your workstation, it honestly makes our day. We love seeing how you use them, so we’ve started grouping these photos (with permission) into a showcase page. These are wonderful references if you want to see how the Toucan looks in the real world beyond our own product photography.

2. The Battery Consumption Issue Has Been Fixed

In our initial release, we noticed that the right side (the trackpad side) consumed battery significantly faster than the left. Some users reported that the right side would only last half a day before needing a charge.

We want to give a huge thank you to geeksville, who modified the driver and firmware to support ZMK_SLEEP and SOFT_OFF in a correct way. This allows us to save a massive amount of power. Now, with normal usage, both sides of the Toucan can last around 6 days.

3. New Materials and More Options

While the original shiny black acrylic and silver top plate remains a classic, we’ve introduced several new options based on requests:

  • The 36-Key Toucan: This was the most popular request after the launch of the 42-key version. For the minimalists and Miryoku fans, the 36-key version is officially ready for your favorite keymap. The 36-key version is available in https://shop.beekeeb.com/products/toucan-36

  • Black Aluminum Top Plates: For everyone who loves the “all-black” look, these are now available as a standalone product for both the 42-key and 36-key versions.

  • Matte Acrylic Case: The new matte acrylic pieces are much less prone to fingerprints and pair beautifully with the black aluminum top plates.

  • Crystal-Clear Display Covers: The original version used an acrylic plate combined with a thin film. We’ve improved this to a single-piece design that is more durable, clearer, and offers better protection for the display.
